Community pools do more than keep people cool—they teach lifesaving skills, host school galas, and give families a safe place to be together.
If you’re responsible for a municipal pool, community centre, or aquatic complex in Zimbabwe, our job at Premium Pools is simple: help you build or upgrade a facility that’s welcoming, safe, and affordable to run year after year.

Why community pools matter
- Public good: Learn-to-swim, drowning prevention, and inclusive recreation for every age and ability.
- Local pride: A clean, well-run pool becomes a hub for events, galas, and tourism weekends.
- Smart investment: Modern hydraulics, covers, and efficient plant rooms cut operating costs dramatically.
Start with your community, not just the drawings
Before we sketch anything, we meet the people who’ll use—and run—the facility: schools, clubs, disability groups, lifeguards, caretakers. That conversation shapes everything:
- Programming: weekday learn-to-swim, evening laps, weekend family sessions, seasonal galas.
- Zoning & access: gentle beach entries for little ones and wheelchairs, deeper lanes for training, spectator seating that actually sees the action.
- Flow: safe turnstiles/entry, shaded waiting areas, change rooms that drain properly, and walkways that don’t bottleneck at gate closes.
We also survey prevailing winds, afternoon shade lines, borehole/municipal supply, and safe plant-room access so day-to-day operations feel easy, not heroic.
What we build (common Zimbabwean set-ups)
- Teaching & family pools: broad steps, shallow shelves, warm-water options for lessons.
- Competition/galas pools: lane lines, starting blocks, anti-turbulence returns, simple timing-board provision.
- Multi-pool campuses: a 25 m training pool + a shallow program pool + splash zone, sharing one smart plant room.
Build quality for hard use—and easy upkeep
Public facilities take a beating. We specify gunite/concrete shells engineered for local soils, then detail them for durability:
- Finishes: UV-stable tiles or premium marble plaster that stand up to thousands of feet and quick turnarounds.
- Edges & coping: rounded, comfortable, with continuous handholds where needed.
- Decking: textured, cool-underfoot pavers with good fall to drains (no puddle traps).
- Lighting: even, low-glare underwater light plus safe pathway lighting for evening sessions.
Looks great on opening day—and still looks great after peak December.
Operations that respect tight budgets
Municipal budgets are real. We design the hydraulics first so bills behave:
- Oversized filtration at lower velocities keeps water clearer with fewer backwashes.
- Variable-speed pumps run low overnight and ramp up for peak sessions.
- Backwash recovery routes to settlement/filtration tanks for irrigation or pre-treated top-up.
- Covers (manual or automatic) cut evaporation and heat loss—quietly the biggest saver.
- Solar + heat-pump hybrids extend the season without nasty power surprises.
- Automated chemistry (ORP/pH control, salt or liquid dosing) keeps water stable and caretaker-friendly.

Accessibility & safety—visible where it counts, invisible where it should be
We bake safety into the layout: wide, non-slip entries; clear depth transitions; compliant gates and fencing; anti-entrapment fittings; lifeguard sightlines; and logical circulation so crowds don’t cross swimmers.
We deliver one-page daily/weekly SOPs, chemical handling guidance, and signage that people actually read.
Programming that builds usage (and pays bills)
Great water deserves a full timetable. We help you structure:
- School learn-to-swim blocks during weekdays.
- Public lap sessions morning/evening.
- Aqua-aerobics and seniors’ hours (popular, low-impact, inclusive).
- Club training & weekend galas with simple event overlays (lanes, blocks, banners).
- Family splash sessions with shade and lifeguard coverage.
The result is a friendly facility that feels busy for the right reasons—and creates space for small revenue lines (lessons, events, kiosk).
Renovations: turning legacy pools into modern assets
Most councils already have a pool that’s tired or expensive to run. You don’t always need to start over. We routinely:
- Reline or retile worn shells to stop seepage and modernise the look.
- Re-engineer the plant room with VSD pumps, right-sized filters, and automation (instant OPEX relief).
- Add covers, solar/heat-pump systems, and backwash recovery to cut water and energy use.
- Refresh decking, shade, and seating to make the place inviting again.
We’ll phase works to keep some water open through the season whenever possible.
The council/facility-manager checklist (copy into your spec)
- Hydraulics first: low pipe velocities, balanced returns, skimmers placed for local wind.
- Filtration & pumps: oversize the filter; use variable-speed; plan for longer, slower runs.
- Water saving: after-hours covers and backwash recovery are non-negotiables.
- Heating: size solar + heat-pump for shoulder seasons; commit to covers.
- Accessibility & safety: beach entries/ramps, compliant gates, clear sightlines.
- Plant room: dry, ventilated, labelled—and reachable without wheeling chemicals through crowds.
- SOPs & training: handover checklists so staff changes don’t derail quality.
Tick these boxes and you’ll feel it in monthly numbers and community feedback.
FAQs
How deep should a community pool be?
For general use, 1.2–1.8 m with a separate shallow program area works brilliantly. Competition lanes can step to 2.0 m where racing or water-polo matters.
Can we heat affordably?
Yes—pair solar with a heat pump and commit to covers. We’ll size to your schedule and climate, not vanity temperatures.
Is salt water better for large public pools?
Often, yes. Salt with automation gives stable water and fewer “chlorine smell” complaints. We’ll recommend what suits your staffing and usage.
We only have borehole water—okay?
Usually, with sensible pre-treatment, storage, and changeover logic. We’ll plan it at concept stage so you don’t fight it later.
Can you train our lifeguards/caretakers?
We provide practical handover training and seasonal tune-ups. Clear SOPs keep quality steady when teams rotate.
